The Foundation is a recognized centre for information and communication regarding material and immaterial changes in the city, for which the entire city is called to contribute to building the story of the city itself.

After more than 10 years, we left the second floor of the Salaborsa building in late 2018 and early 2019 to occupy new spaces identified by the City of Bologna. These include part of the ground floor of Palazzo d’Accursio, the open space of the Cortile Guido Fanti, and some areas on the ground floor of the Salaborsa building. This move affected our working and laboratory spaces at the beginning of 2019; it is gradually being finalized as the works progress and entirely new installations are created.

These activities were promoted by the City of Bologna and coordinated by the FIU with the scope of creating the Quadrilatero della Cultura, a new centre for culture and participation growing out of the Laboratorio Aperto project (programme financed by Axis 6 ‘Attractive and participative cities’ under the Regional Operational Programme of the European Regional Development Fund 2014-2020). The project for the Quadrilatero della Cultura aims to reinforce the identity of the area around Piazza Maggiore through a new way of living and enhancing the immense historical and cultural heritage that distinguishes it, aspiring to participation and innovation.

Work is currently underway on institutional public spaces adjacent to Piazza Maggiore (Palazzo d’Accursio, the Salaborsa building and Auditorium Enzo Biagi, Cortile Guido Fanti, and the former Galleria d’Accursio) which, through renovation and various activities, are becoming a single large space that is more connected, open, and accessible. These renovated spaces are giving rise to a new centre for culture and participation in Bologna, a public space in the heart of the metropolitan city dedicated to the interactive use of cultural goods and creative collaboration between citizens, associations, businesses, research centres, and institutions. Some of the spaces are already active and open to the public; others are currently being prepared.

Books, music, cinema, photography, exhibitions, meetings: with the completed works, citizens and tourists of all ages will be able to access consolidated cultural services renewed in a contemporary key, but also new immaterial and innovative services dedicated to changes in the city, such as access to data and information, spaces for groups, conversation and interaction, experimentation of new technologies, etc.

Imagining and experiencing a new idea of the city.
